Ingredient Spotlight: Argan Oil
Argan, Schmargan. So what’s the big deal with this nutty oil anyway?
Argan oil is the beauty ingredient of the moment, popping up in just about every skin, hair, and color product on the shelves. It's with good reason: Argan oil mimics the sebum your skin naturally produces, and fills in the cracks on your skin’s surface to help lock in moisture.
Lightweight and quick to absorb, argan oil boasts higher amounts of antioxidants than its competitors (move over, olive and grapeseed oil) and is packed with skin-healing superstar compounds like linoleic acid (shown to help wounds heal faster) and tocopherol (also known as Vitamin E – a powerful antioxidant) making it an excellent anti-aging ingredient for serums, creams, lotions and even sunscreens.
The science stacks up: “The blend of omega 6 fatty acids and gamma tocopherol that make up argan oil can help reduce inflammation and assist in skin regeneration,” says Ni’Kita Wilson, YouBeauty's cosmetic chemistry expert.
Native to a small region in Morocco, the local Berber women have been hand-pressing the oil and using it for cooking and seasoning for centuries. Painstakingly squeezed out and distilled from a paste Moroccan locals make out of argan pulp (the fleshy meat of the nut) and seed, the oil has been used to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and even inflamed joints.
While argan oil may sound like a panacea for the moisture-deprived, don’t think oils are only for dry-skinned folks. Clinical studies point to argan oil’s sebum-regulating effects which means even those with acne, or just plain oily skin (midday shine anyone?) can benefit from argan oil.
